Making Design Circular

A membership community in which you get to feel proud of contributing to a thriving planet with every product you make.

  • How would it feel to let go of the heavy sense of duty, guilt and responsibility that seems to come with environmentalism and step into excitement, wide-eyed curiosity and creativity?

  • What if you could cut through the greenwashing, confusion and overwhelm with clear, actionable steps and advice from the people two steps ahead of you?

  • What would it feel like to be part of a unique community of fellow travellers and form powerful, ongoing networks of support for the journey ahead?

  • Instead of feeling constantly behind and trapped in a loop of second-guessing, imagine having the time and clarity to transform all your good intentions into genuine action and progress.

  • Experience the joy of working in alignment with your values and regaining your sense of pride in what you do.

  • Imagine a space in which you can bring your whole, imperfect self and start making a difference straight away, no matter where you are on your journey.

Join MAKING DESIGN CIRCULAR and leave the weight of guilt and duty at the door. Bring your whole, imperfect, nuanced, contradictory self and we will meet you where you are. Find alignment with your values, reignite your curiosity and creativity, and connect with a supportive and empowering community of fellow travellers.

I’d often felt a disconnect between my work as a furniture designer/maker and my personal values; so I decided to bring them closer together. Being part of Making Design Circular has given me the knowledge to get started and a community to share my ideas with. I now have a job that I love and care about and I am excited about my future as a maker again.

The membership community is the place to share your progress and ask any questions. You will be part of a tightly curated group of like-minded designers and makers, so this is a wonderful opportunity to form a close network and learn from each other, support each other and hold each other accountable.

“It’s so nice to be in a group that’s at the same stage and feeling such similar struggles with the opportunity to chat them through and support each other.” – Fiona.

Within this space, there is also a co-curated library of Reading, Watching & Listening recommendations to suit all learning styles and our ‘Little Green Book’ of eco-partners we love.

WHEN DO WE MEET?

Live calls will take place on Thursdays at 12noon UK time (GMT/BST). Guest Speakers and Coaching Calls will be recorded and available for replay if you can’t make the live.

As a community, we are committed to our own personal sustainability as well as that of the planet, so we factor in two rest months, one from mid-December until mid-January and one for the month of July. This time gives you an opportunity to take a break and rest, or to catch up on any content you’ve missed. These have been factored into the monthly pricing.

All content will be delivered digitally, so you can take part from anywhere in the world as long as you have a decent internet connection.

HEAR FROM OUR FOUNDING MEMBERS & BETA TESTERS:

‘I’ve just found out I’m going to get a £10,000 research and development grant from Arts Council Wales. Working with Katie was a factor for the grant panel. They said they didn’t want to fund anyone working in isolation. Pivoting my business to become more sustainable felt like a huge risk, but it’s already paying off. Thank you!’
– Sarah
‘I am studying for a master’s, and it’s been brilliant to meet designers who want to approach waste in a similar way to me. Having a framework for that part of my practice to hold me accountable has really kept me on track. Plus – it’s a really lovely community.’
– Annabel
‘This is a community of creative people. It is so mind-opening and every class is full of happy surprises. I am just in awe of the diverse content, and, as somebody who is working full-time, it is the perfect opportunity to have inspiration without the pressure. It is at just the right pace for somebody with a busy life who needs food for thought and inspiration.’
– Amy
‘The best part has been finding the similarities between other people’s journeys and my own. I feel like I’ve finally found my people.’
- Diana
‘I have been happier than I could have expected. Being an architect and interior designer with a passion for sustainability is a challenge, but Katie’s powerful and energetic leadership is great. The interviews, reading suggestions and challenges helped me to go into the subject in more depth. Katie’s power gives me the strength to go on studying, even while working. Even though the membership is aimed at designer-makers, I’ve found it interesting for any creative mind.’
– Elisa
‘I have loved the opportunity to see my practice not as one thing or another, but to put my thoughts on hold for a little while and just immerse myself into a different world. I would really recommend future participants do all the tasks and challenges even they don’t feel relevant – they will all give you new opportunities and new ways of thinking.’
– Sarah

This is for you if:

  • You are a designer-maker, artist or design student making your own products, or making prototypes for manufacture.
  • You used to feel really proud of working with your hands, but increasingly have a creeping sense of guilt about putting more yet more ‘stuff’ into the world.
  • You want to feel excited and empowered in your creative practice again.
  • You are ready to make the financial and time commitment in becoming more sustainable in your creative practice.
  • You are ready to embrace progress over perfection and collaboration over competition.
  • You are open to this membership being imperfect and co-created. (We have run a successful beta version, but it will continue to evolve.)
  • You are ready to put the time and effort into creating genuine change and take responsibility for your own learning and development.
  • You are already actively doing feminist, anti-racist, anti-ableist and LGBTQIA+ inclusion work or, at the very least, you firmly believe in equity and equality for all people and are open to learning more.
  • You have any special needs that I can support by adapting the way learning materials are delivered or conversations take place – just let me know.
  • You are perfectly imperfect and still haven’t quite weaned yourself off Diet Coke/single-use coffee cups/cotton wool buds/plastic packaging…

This is not for you if:

  • You are already running a fully sustainable business with little room for improvement and/or you think you have all the answers – this is a space for listening, learning, development and evolution.
  • You don’t have the time to show up for the live calls and participate in the community – while we understand that things come up from time to time, we are looking for engaged members.
  • You want a custom-made roadmap for your business and hand-holding through the process. We are not yet in a position to offer 121 consultancy.
  • You are going to struggle with imperfection, contraction and nuance from your fellow members or the membership itself:  ‘progress over perfection’ is one of our key values and we will model that for members.
  • You are not ready to invest financially in making your business more circular.
  • You are looking for an immediate and tangible ROI – that’s just not how this stuff works, sadly.
  • You are uncomfortable with historically marginalised voices being centred in conversations. This membership aims to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for women, people of colour, disabled people, those with neurodivergencies and members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
  • You have a terrible internet connection – everything is delivered digitally.

Meet your guide
along this journey

Katie Treggiden grew up surrounded by the natural world. An idyllic Cornish childhood spent in boats, on the beach or exploring the countryside was augmented by a fascination with nature documentaries, particularly those by her childhood hero David Attenborough.

She read biology and marketing management at Oxford Brookes University, deepening her understanding of environmental issues while honing her communication skills, before embarking on a successful 12-year career in advertising, marketing and brand strategy.

In 2010, Katie shifted gears to become a craft and design journalist, focusing on creativity as a positive agent for social change. Having written four books, established an award-winning blog and an independent magazine, as well as contributing to publications such as The Guardian, Viewpoint, Design Milk, Crafts Magazine, Dezeen and Monocle24, she undertook a master’s degree in the history of design at the University of Oxford. She set herself an informal question to guide her research: ‘Can craft save the world?’ She graduated in 2019 with, not only a distinction and papers on feminism, bio-facture, repair and the plastics crisis to her name, but with an answer to the question that has become the ‘North Star’ for an emerging body of work about the role that craft and design can play in sustainability and the circular economy. It was during her time at Oxford that she laid the groundwork for her fifth book, Wasted: When Trash Becomes Treasure (Ludion, 2020), her podcast Circular with Katie Treggiden, and this membership community.

She was the founder and first president of women’s network Bloom and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts – and despite having written an entire paper on the evils of Coca-Cola, she still has a Diet Coke habit she can’t quite seem to shake!

We meet virtually via Zoom at 12noon UK time (GMT in the winter and BST in the summer) every Thursday.

The Coaching & Mentoring, Guest Speaker and New Member Welcome sessions are recorded and can be accessed in the membership space afterwards. Due to the nature of the Connect and Co-Working sessions, these are not recorded.

If you are in the UK, we have to charge you VAT. If you are not in the UK and outside the EU, we will not charge you VAT. If you are in the EU, we have to charge VAT unless you provide a VAT number, in which case we don’t. Simple, huh?! If you’re having any trouble entering your VAT number, make sure the two-letter prefix (eg DK for Denmark) matches the country you’ve entered in your address. Give us a shout if you’re having any trouble and we’ll get you sorted.

You can cancel your membership at any time – just give us at least three days’ notice before your next payment is due, so we can catch it in time. Please see the full T&Cs for more details.

Nope. We’ve moved away from Facebook and are now using a platform called Circle, which is much more user-friendly, allows for richer content and better conversations, and avoids the distractions and ethical and mental health dilemmas that come with using Facebook.

Nope, it’s not, but that is really confusing – sorry! It was just too good a name not to use! The Facebook Group is a free group that will eventually by migrated over the Circle as the free part of this community (hence keeping the name). Making Design Circular (this one!) is an open-ended programme and membership programme that includes all of the above. If you’re already in the Facebook Group, you are probable a perfect fit for the programme and membership and we hope you’ll join us.

Sure thing – use the chatbox below, DM me on Instagram, or drop me an email. Please be patient with us – we are a tiny team of actual humans, but I promise we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.
