the seed

Find your unique contribution to environmentalism
in just four lunch hours.

Do you ever feel completely overwhelmed by the climate crisis – as if there’s nothing you can do as a designer maker that will make the slightest dent in the world’s problems? I mean, from biodiversity loss to plastic pollution and rising CO2 levels, where do you even start? And how can one person or small business make a difference anyway?

Well, the good news, is you can’t solve all the world’s problems, so you can stop trying! The even better news is that you can actually have more impact by choosing one tiny problem to focus on. But which one?

That’s where The Seed comes in. Over the course of four lunchtime sessions, we will explore the unique contribution that you, and only you, can make to environmentalism. We will find the tiny problem that you can solve – and have fun, play to your strengths and make a living doing it.

And the best bit? You will be joined by a community of other designers and makers also defining their unique contribution, so you can be reassured that between us, we can save the planet and all the species that call her home – including us!

Frequently Asked Questions

Fear not, you will get a replay the same day so you can catch up in your own time.

If you are in the UK, we have to charge you VAT. If you are not in the UK and outside the EU, we will not charge you VAT. If you are in the EU, we have to charge VAT unless you provide a VAT number, in which case we don’t. Simple, huh?! But don’t worry, when you enter your details into the payment cart, VAT will be added automatically if you do need to pay it. If you’re having any trouble entering your VAT number, make sure the two-letter prefix (eg DK for Denmark) matches the country you’ve entered in your address. Give us a shout if you’re having any trouble and we’ll get you sorted.

Sure thing – use my Telegram link here, DM me on Instagram, or drop me an email. Please be patient with us – we are a tiny team of actual humans, but I promise we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

This is for you if:

  • You want to work more sustainably, but aren’t sure where to start
  • You are a designer-maker, artist or design student making your own products, or making prototypes for manufacture.
  • You used to feel really proud of working with your hands, but increasingly have a creeping sense of guilt about putting more yet more ‘stuff’ into the world.
  • You want to feel excited and empowered in your creative practice again.
  • You are open to this project being experimental, imperfect and co-created.
  • You are ready to put the time and effort into creating genuine change and helping me to do the same, by providing feedback during the course and providing a testimonial at the end.
  • You are already actively doing feminist, anti-racist, anti-ableist and LGBTQIA+ inclusion work or, at the very least, you firmly believe in equity and equality for all people and are open to learning more.
  • You have any special needs that I can support by adapting the way learning materials are delivered or conversations take place – just let me know.

This is not for you if:

  • You already know exactly what your contribution to environmentalism is and are happy that you are already doing your bit
  • You are not ready to set aside four lunch hours (or catch the replays) to make time for this work
  • You want me or other members of the programme to tell you what to do – this programme is about digging deep and finding answers within yourself
  • You demand perfectionism – we value progress over perfection
  • You are not ready to invest financially in making your business more circular.
  • You are looking for an immediate and tangible ROI or business support.
  • You are uncomfortable with traditionally marginalised voices being centred in conversations. This course aims to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for women, people of colour, disabled people, those with neurodivergencies and members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
  • You have a terrible internet connection – everything is delivered digitally.

Meet your fearless leader

Katie Treggiden grew up surrounded by the natural world. An idyllic Cornish childhood spent in boats, on the beach or exploring the countryside was augmented by a fascination with nature documentaries, particularly those by her childhood hero David Attenborough. She read biology and marketing management at Oxford Brookes University, deepening her understanding of environmental issues while honing her communication skills, before embarking on a successful 12-year career in advertising, marketing and brand strategy.

In 2010, Katie shifted gears to become a craft and design journalist, focusing on creativity as a positive agent for social change. Having written four books, established an award-winning blog and an independent magazine, as well as contributing to publications such as The Guardian, Viewpoint, Design Milk, Crafts Magazine, Elle Decoration and Monocle24, she undertook a master’s degree in the history of design at the University of Oxford. She set herself an informal question to guide her research: ‘Can craft save the world?’ She graduated in 2019 with, not only a distinction and papers on feminism, bio-facture, repair and the plastics crisis to her name, but with an answer to the question that has become the ‘North Star’ for an emerging body of work about the role that craft and design can play in sustainability and the circular economy. It was during her time at Oxford that she laid the groundwork for her fifth book, Wasted: When Trash Becomes Treasure (Ludion, 2020) and her podcast Circular with Katie Treggiden. Since then she has launched Waste: A Masterclass and Making Design Circular, her membership community for designers and makers who want to feel proud of contributing to a thriving planet with every product they make.

She was the founder and first president of women’s network Bloom and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts – and despite having written an entire paper on the evils of Coca-Cola, she still has a Diet Coke habit she can’t quite seem to shake!
