“STAY CURIOUS, IMPERFECT & DEFIANTLY HOPEFUL”

I sign off every email with the words, ‘Stay curious, imperfectly and defiantly hopeful.’ Why? Because those are the foundational values that underpin everything I do—and I want them for you too.

Curiosity is how I stay connected to the world around me. I worked with a creative director in my first ad agency who believed that ‘good ideas come from a well-furnished mind’ and encouraged us to furnish our minds with anything from books to theatre tickets that would expand our horizons, build empathy, and fill our brains with interesting stuff. I’ve been doing it ever since. That means when you work with me, your brief lands on fertile soil.

Imperfection is vital because there’s no such thing as perfect, but the belief that it’s possible keeps us stuck. Done is not only better than perfect, it’s the only option available. I’m on a mission to share true stories of imperfect progress towards genuine sustainability, so those of us on that journey can connect, inspire each other and move forward together.

And finally, defiant hope. Let’s be brutally honest: despair is an absolutely rational response to everything that is going on the world right now and I’m not immune to it. But I am a bit of a rebel, and so every morning, I wake up and choose to believe that a better world is possible and then act accordingly. Because without hope, there is no action and without action, there is no hope.

THE OFFICIAL LINE:

I have spent 25+ years working in communications within the creative industries. I’ve worked with clients from Fortune 500 brands such as Emirates and Kia Motors to design brands such as Tarkett and designer-founders such as Bethan Gray. I’ve written six books on craft, design and the circular economy and countless articles for newspapers and magazines from The Guardian to Dezeen. Homes & Gardens named me their ‘Eco-Champion Thought Leader’—the first non-designer to be recognised in their Design Awards. I’ve got a degree and two post-graduate qualifications in marketing and a Master’s in History of Design from the University of Oxford. And I’m a Design Council Expert, a BioLeadership Fellow and a Change in Nature facilitator.

THE BOTTOM LINE:

Sit next to me around a campfire, and I will tell you a story that will make you laugh, or cry, or see something anew—but one thing’s for sure, it will be absolutely true. I am a passionate environmentalist and a talented storyteller. I love the buzz and culture of cities and the wild windswept Cornish coastline in equal measure. I am a solar-powered morning person, a year-round sea swimmer, a dog person, and a bit of a nerd. And I make a mean s’more! ;)

What the environmental crisis needs now is not more data or more tech (we have all the science and most of the solutions), but better stories. It’s time to start envisioning the future we are working towards. And if you want to be part of that future, it’s time to stop hiding your light under a bushel and start talking about sustainability with confidence, so you can connect with the right-fit clients who will help you get there; who will help us all get there. I can help you do that.
